NEWINGTON - The Newington girls basketball team had to get past E.O. Smith, the two-time defending CCC Tournament champions, if it wanted to reach next week’s Class L quarterfinals.
The Indians did just that, taking care of business at home and taking down the Panthers 50-34 to secure another home matchup in the quarterfinals, when they will host Pomperaug on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Newington trailed by one after the first quarter but answered with a 7-0 run to start the second, though E.O. Smith had an answer of its own and trailed by just two at the half. The Indians started the third quarter like they did the second, dominating defensively and rattling off a 7-1 run to help take a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter. A Karissa Zocco 3-pointer stretched the lead to 14 early in the fourth and Newington never looked back.
If the Indians want to see the semifinals, they will have to take down a Pomperaug team that beat them 49-42 back on Dec. 28, though that loss came on the road.
