WEST HARTFORD - It was a tough weekend for the Newington 19U CT Elite Baseball Association team.
Newington, playing in place of its American Legion team this summer, was swept in a doubleheader on Sunday by West Hartford at Hall High School by scores of 2-1 and 8-2.
Mike Sobolewski pitched a strong first game for Newington. He allowed just two runs and three hits, while striking out four. But he didn’t get much help from his offense, which was stymied for most of the afternoon by Joe Dooley, who pitched a complete game and surrendered just five hits for West Hartford.
Newington was led offensively by Gunnar Johnson, Nick Babineau and Brandon Baglan, who all recorded doubles. Nick Cox and Austyn Howe recorded the team’s other two hits.
Newington didn’t fare much better in the second game of the day, struggling to generate much offense against Ean Tyler, who pitched five innings to earn the win for West Hartford.
Johnson and Ryan Saindon led Newington at the plate with two hits and an RBI apiece. Domenick Bukowski and Sean Hurley had Newington’s other base hits in the night cap.
With the losses, Newington is now 2-5, while West Hartford improved to 5-3.
Newington will be back in action on Tuesday against Meriden at Legion Field at 5:45 p.m. The team will also host Simsbury on Wednesday, Cheshire on Thursday, Meriden on Saturday and Berlin on Sunday at Alumni Field.
