The Newington CT Elite Baseball Association team had a busy weekend, playing a total of four games over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

Newington finished a suspended game on Saturday against Meriden and played a makeup game, also against Meriden, after the completion of the suspended contest. On Sunday, the team played a doubleheader against Berlin, with all four games being played at Newington High School.

In the completion of a suspended game from June 28, Newington defeated Meriden by a score of 2-1. Nick Cox drove in Gunnar Johnson in the bottom of the seventh to give Newington the victory. Cox had three hits on the day and drove in both Newington runs. Mike Sobolewski earned the victory in relief for Newington.

In the bottom of the seventh of the second game, Cox was once again the hero when he drove in the winning run again, this time with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Austyn Howe, who had walked to give Newington the 4-3 walk-off victory.

Newington jumped to a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Danny Crouse hit a sacrifice fly to score Sobolewski, but Meriden pushed across three runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Newington rallied to tie the game at three in the bottom of the sixth when Jose Ventura walked and came around to score on a long double to right center by Johnson. Newington tied the score at three when Sobolewski was caught stealing in a rundown, but Johnson was able to scamper home from third on the double steal, knotting the game at three and setting up Cox to seal the dramatic victory.

Domenick Bukowski picked up the victory with two shutout innings in relief.

Newington dropped its two games on Sunday to league-leading Berlin, falling 5-3 in eight innings and 5-0 in Game 2. Adam Bilinsky and Gianni Fanelli combined to pitch a three-hitter for Berlin in the first game, with Fanelli getting the victory in relief. Paul D’Amore homered and doubled to lead Berlin at the plate.

Dennis Machial pitched a strong game for Newington, going 7 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and striking out two. Sean Hurley struck the only batter he faced to end the eighth and Howe led Newington at the plate with two hits. Crouse had Newington’s only other hit in Game 1.

Matt Kozak pitched six shutout innings for Berlin in Game 2 to lead Berlin to the win. Berlin was led at the plate by Jon D’Amore, who had four hits and drove in two runs. Paul D’Amore added a double and triple for Berlin. Newington had hits from Bukowski, Sam Dionne and Howe. Newington fell to 6-8 after the weekend.
